These apply to most cut flowers, hydrangeas included:

• Clean vase – bacteria = short flower life
   
• Fresh, cool water – change it every 1–2 days
   
• Trim stems – 1–2 cm off at a 45° angle (helps water uptake)
   
• Remove submerged leaves – they rot and cloud the water
   
• Keep cool – away from direct sun, heaters, and fruit (fruit gives off ethylene gas)
   

• Trim stems under running water or immediately place them in water after cutting.
   
• Hydrangea stems can seal up—re-cut every 2 days.
   

• Fill the vase generously. Hydrangeas are thirst monsters.
   
• Top up daily if needed.
   

• Lightly mist petals once or twice a day.
   
• They absorb moisture directly through the flower heads.
   

Totally normal—and fixable.

Option A: The Soak

1. Submerge the entire flower head (yes, petals and all) in cool water
    
2. Leave for 30–45 minutes
    
3. Shake gently and return to the vase
   → Often looks revived within an hour
    

Option B: Hot Water Stem Reset

• Cut 1 cm off the stem
   
• Dip the cut end into hot (not boiling) water for 30 seconds
   
• Then place immediately into cool water
  This clears air bubbles blocking water flow
   

• Use commercial flower food if you have it
   
• OR DIY in a pinch:
   
  • 1 tsp sugar
     
  • a drop of bleach
     
  • per liter of water
    (Too much bleach = dead flowers, so go easy)
     

• Bright room, indirect light
   
• Cooler spots last longer (even overnight in a cool room helps)
   

If you want max lifespan:

• Move the vase to a cooler room overnight if you can
  Even a few degrees cooler helps.
   

With this care at 21 °C average room temperature:
👉 6–10 days is very achievable
Some varieties even go longer and dry beautifully at the end.
